Ecumenical tourism in Bethlehem

Despite the danger in West Bank and Gaza, tourists from different countries arrived last year in record numbers in Bethlehem specifically, to the birthplace of Jesus Christ. The number increased to more than 90% compared to 2007 and even for the past few years. More than 250,000 tourists visited Bethlehem during the Christmas week 2008. Years before, the area couldn’t easily attract more than 100,000 tourists for one week.

The influx of tourists is caused by the increasing control of the area which resulted to lesser violence and attacks. After years of experiencing constant danger, the area has finally experienced peace that might work out for the advantage of Bethlehem and even in nearby Nazareth, reputedly the place where Jesus grew up.

The actual area believed to be the birthplace of Jesus Christ is divided into three: a place for Armenians, Orthodox and Catholics is available and each of the faith can have a glimpse of nativity scene every year.
