Haarlem is a very popular city in the Netherlands. Located in the western portion of the country, the city is very accessible because of its proximity to Amsterdam. In fact, part of the city’s popularity is due to its accessibility to Amsterdam.
But that doesn’t mean Haarlem has nothing to offer to tourists aside from its famous neighbour. If you love shopping, then you should be in Haarlem instead of Amsterdam. The number and the quality of shops and malls in the city are very impressive. The city is often regarded as the best place in the country for a great shopping experience.
There are also a few interesting places you should visit. The Teylers Museum which features rocks and other minerals found in the country is considered the oldest in terms of building structure. A guided tour to the museum (Ten Boom – “The Hiding Place”) where Anne Frank used to live should not be missed as well.
Even though you end up in Haarlem doesn’t mean you’re stuck there for a long time. Only less than 20 minutes from Haarlem is Amsterdam. You can even rent a bike and reach Amsterdam in an hour. Accommodation in Haarlem is more accessible compared to Amsterdam. There are many hostels in the city with rates of only a fraction compared to hotels in Amsterdam.
Haarlem is not just a place for shopping; the place is a historical city and a good alternative to regular accommodation when you’re visiting Amsterdam.
