Top nature attractions in Sri Lanka

Filed Under Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, or the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka as it’s formally known, is a small country situated just off of India. The country is located surprisingly close to heavenly destinations such as the Maldives and yet is relatively overlooked as a holiday destination.

The country has a very religious background and is known as the centre of Buddhism. The country that is the shape of a tear drop holds several amazing sights that any explorer would love to witness. To help you explore the country and pick places to visit we have come up with a list of sights to see;

Adam’s Peak

Adam’s peak should be your number one destination to visit within the country. The area is held sacrosanct by 4 religions; Buddhism, Hindus, Christians and Muslims.  The area is an impressive mountain range and has been known as the Butterfly Mountain or “Samanalakande” by locals. Located at the top of one of the mountains is a small Buddhist temple and the shrine of Saman. We recommend bringing a camera, you wouldn’t want to leave the area without a memento.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

If you love animals the Elephant Orphanage is a must see. The orphanage is located 80km from Colombo and is the first place in the world where abandoned and disabled elephants get love and care. Watch baby elephants run around and get fed by human carers or watch the group of jumbos take their daily bath. The orphanage has over 3000 elephants and is a great place to see the creature up close.

Sinharaja Rain Forest

The forest, declared as a UNESCO heritage site, is an undisturbed and distinct area within the country. The forest has become a popular tourist destination for those interested in bird watching, eco value, research or simply for people curious about the area. The area is a treasure trove of endemic species including; amphibians, birds, reptiles, mammals and trees. If you’re lucky you may even see a Leopard or a Purple-faced Langur while trekking through.

  1. Daniel Said,

    The Pinnawela elephant orphanage is a must see. I had the chance to actually feed a baby elephant. Amazing to see how they gulp down 5 litres of milk in 1 minute!
