Turkey holds more than 100 annual festivals, most of these festivities happen in the country’s major cities including Istanbul and Bodrum. However the known number of annual festivities does not even include the local festivals in some remote areas in Turkey. If you visit the country in the summer there is bound to be a festival of some sort to percolate in.

While there are a lot of festivities every tourist can enjoy in Turkey, there are select festivals that truly speak about the country’s culture. Aside from displaying their full support for the local culture, these festivities are fun and full of activities for tourists as well as locals to enjoy.

The Ankara International Film Festival

Every third week of March, Ankara becomes the home of some of the most popular actors, producers, directors and everyone else in the film industry. Hundreds of films go through screenings everyday in various genres. While the festivity is practically a competition, it’s a festival that allows tourists and locals to enjoy fine movie making from around the world.

International Istanbul Theater Festival

Since 1989, the International Istanbul Theater Festival has become the venue for excellence among performance artists from different parts of Europe. The festivities last for nearly one month and usually start in mid-May until mid-June. Aside from traditional performance artists, tourists and locals will also see some collaboration of the old with the new.

Izmir International Fair

The Izmir International Fair is the most popular festival in the country. For two weeks (August and/or September), the city of Izmir dons its festive gear as tradeshow organizers and fairground owners come together to display some of the best festival activities in the country. The fair is very impressive because it adopts a unique theme every year which also attracts new participants.
